Registration and DiversityFri, June 26, 2009You can now register for the True Spin Conference using the mail-in registration form on the conference website. You’ll be able to register with a credit card at the end of the summer.
More conference details are coming next month.
Diversity Scholarships Available
One of the best parts of the True Spin Conference is the people who attend. I’m biased, but I think communications people are usually the nicest working stiffs in the office. They aren’t as likely to be burdened with the big egos of many executive directors. They’re funny. They can communicate clearly, right? They actually read the news and can even cite sources for the gossip they spread. They understand, from tracking propaganda and public opinion, that change doesn’t occur overnight. But this doesn’t stop them from getting more done than everyone else.
One problem we have, even among progressive comms people, is that we aren’t as diverse as we need to be. To address this in a small way, the True Spin Conference has a scholarship program, covering the registration fee for about 5 percent of conference registrants. The application form is on the registration page of the website. Please spread the word, and if you can donate to the travel fund for scholarship recipients, please let me know.
Parody of Conservative Health Care Spin
Regular people are more and more tuned in to the PR tricks of large corporations. So exposing corporate spinmeisters, or parodying them, can be an effective campaign tactic. Here’s a pretty funny example of a parody.
On the topic of exposing unethical PR, I like the work of the Center for Media and Democracy, which spotlights PR manipulators, wherever they hide. And what separates us from them, even if we use similar tactics? Our spin is ethical and fact-based. Theirs, not always.
Wanted: Workshop Ideas
If you have an idea for a panel discussion, send it to me.
Tagline Contest
It’s surprising how many organizations do not have a decent tagline—a short description of the outfit. Maybe Getting Attention’s 2009 Nonprofit Tagline Awards will motivate folks to sharpen their taglines, if necessary.
See you,
Jason Salzman
